This is Ridiculous!
Ok if you have read any of my previous posts you should know I always like to meddle in the "hot issues" in the news/politics/social arena. So what's the topic of today?
ILLEGAL IMMIGRATION
So why did I title this post "This is Ridiculous"? Because it is! I'm watching the news and the reports of "massive" protests to the resolutions in the congress which "crack down" on illegal immigration. People are marching through the streets of Arizona and California waving Mexican flags and signs touting "Save Our Rights".
?????????????????????????
The individuals marching in the said protests are absolutely, 100% ridiculous and completely divorced from the issue of illegal immigration. Note: I said issue of illegal immigration and not illegal immigration itself because I'm sure (as some of them said in interviews) that they are personally affected by illegal immigration. But just because you have a relative or friend that is here illegally doesn't make you an expert on the subject.
They say:
I say:
You're an idiot. Illegal Immigration is not about race, history, or irrelevant historical boundaries. Take notes.
To those protesters today and all this past week: if you march around with Mexan flags and claiming Mexican (nation) allegiance - go back to Mexico. If you want to live and work here in a lawful and responsible way, with Mexican heritage but American allegiance, then welcome to your new home.
My mother's family is pure Italian. Big family, big dinners, big hugs - all Italian. They celebrate their heritage and culture, but our allegiance is to the U.S. - not Italy.
I acknowledge that I haven't offered any solutions to the illegal immigration problem in this post, and I won't because my main objective was to point out how ridiculous the protesters are who marched against illegal immigration reform. I may offer my opinions on what should be done about illegal immigration later if I'm bored and in the mood, but I will tell you now that waving Mexican flags and pronouncing "brown pride" isn't the solution to a very real problem.
They say:
> immigration reform is discrimination against Mexicans and other latinos
> this country was founded by immigrants and we should continue that tradition
> southern parts of the U.S.A. was once Mexican territory, and therefore they have the right to be there
I say:
You're an idiot. Illegal Immigration is not about race, history, or irrelevant historical boundaries. Take notes.
> Illegal immigration is about SECURITY- if anyone can come into the U.S. undocumented then terrorists, drug traffickers, weapon dealers, and an array of other criminals can too...just as easily and discretely. Some people try to turn illegal immigration into a social issue and sadly, to a minor extent it is. There are racists in this country and there is a lot of hate (I should know, I'm gay). And some people claim war on illegal immigration purely for racist reasons and with no regard or knowledge of the real issues. Unfortunately, they are on the right side, but with all the wrong reasons.
> Illegal immigration is also about ECONOMICS - illegal immigrants aren't bound by U.S. laws (more appropriately, don't pay attention to U.S. laws) and therefore can be paid next to nothing for work. Relevance Ex.: You own a candy company and need employees to package your lollypops. Two choices (1) You can place an ad and hire U.S. citizens and pay them the minimum wage set in that state or (2) You can pick up some guys standing on the corner of the street and give them a ten dollar bill for a full days work with no documentation, no identification, no paper trail. Hmm, I wonder what a financially conscious businessman would do. More realistically-the owner of the candy factory discovers this cheap source of labor and fires citizens already working there. Hm...unemployment.
> Continuing the point from above, many people say illegal immigrants do the jobs "Americans won't do". Um...no. The correct version is Americans won't do the jobs that pay an illegal immigrant's wage. And in a completely legal country, those jobs shouldn't exist.
> So then people say "well American wages are too high compared to the rest of the world". Yes and that is why we have outsourcing. But for the jobs without the ability to outsource (like lawn care, construction, and some factory work), there is a major discrepancy in wages between (and this is crucial now) economically developed nations and economically depressed nations. And we in the U.S. just happen to share a nice, long, open border with one of the latter. So with your logic we should start paying wages of an economically depressed nation? And reduce the nation's quality of living? Mexico has some real economic problems and I am all for helping them fix those problems - but not at the expense of our quality of life.
